American Race Cars (美国赛车; YHA001)

Introduction:

This cartridge contains a game called "Race America" in its North American NES version (it was Corvette ZR-1 Challenge in Europe).

Is the game complete?

As far as I know... almost. The copyrights were removed, as usual, but the game itself seems to be complete.

Just "Race America", no copyrights.

Does the cover represent the game inside?

I think it does. You are able to see cars that look like the ones in the actual game. The only thing I don't like from the cover is that the title is not the actual title, but that's something common in pirate cartridges, since the printed title is a translation from the Chinese title (美国赛车, Pinyin: Měiguó Sàichē, English: "American Racing Cars").

Do you like the game?

I usually find racing games kind of fun, but this one is way too complicated for my expectations. Just look at the screenshot below. What do I have to look at? Where's my car? Who am I playing as? It's one of those games I've bought for about 14 ARS back in the day (about 1,5 US dollars today) and played for about half an hour, then I called my sister to explain me how to play, we played in multiplayer mode, she lost, she told me the game was bad, we agreed and I placed this game on the shelf. It was frustrating because, when you are trying to speed up your car, you have to press up on the d-pad, wait for the car to reach the limit, press up again, wait one more time and repeat until your car reaches the limit. That was tedious! Also, when you are hit by another car, your car doesn't slow down. You have to slow down manually in order to speed up again! Give me a break!

On the other hand, this game is good for two reasons: the first one is its music. It's just OK, you can listen to it when playing, although there's no music during your race. The second one are the graphics: they're great, they look good and the opponent's face makes me laugh everytime I play this game. Whether you like the game or hate it is a just matter of taste.

What do I have to look at? Where am I? Who am I?

Once you played the game, would you play again?

I say I would just because it's the only racing game I own that supports two players.

Do you find the game difficult?

No, you may select your difficulty before racing. The controls make that difficult. Once you reach the speed limit and want to slow down, you will have to make the same thing you did to speed up but pressing down instead of up.

In that case, why did you buy this game?

Just because of the cover. I was looking for classic NES titles. As the shopkeeper told me none of the games I was looking for were available, I had to choose from a box full of cartridges. I took this one because I thought the cover was awesome.

Olympic 2000 - 9999999 in 1

Introduction:

This is a story about a cartridge that claimed to have unlimited games inside its memory, but it was a cruel prank on video game players. It was not the first lie that came from China (yes, it was made there) since my entire Famicom console it's a Chinese clone.

About the Cartridge:

If you take a look at its label, you will be able to see six games: Clay Shooting, Duck Hunt, High Jump, Super Mario, Soccer and Olympic 2008. Now, I have to explain what it is talking about.

First of all, High Jump is a built-in mode of Olympic 2008, which is actually Track & Field by Konami. It also includes Duck Hunt, split in two different modes: the one/two player mode and the clay shooting game. This cartridge also includes Super Mario Bros., Galaxian and Soccer.

By the way, in the cartridge's label, Clay Shooting is misspelled (Clay Shotting), and the Duck Hunt picture has nothing to do with the actual game; something that is very common in pirate cartridges and multicarts.

About the Built-In Menu:

The built-in menu is simple, just a bunch of names with numbers, a pointer, the compilation's name and the basic instructions ("press start to do something, select to do something else..."). If you look at it, you will notice that there are only 5 different games; the others are just names copied from already listed games that start in different levels, change palettes among other minimal changes in ROMs.

About the included games:

As I said before, only five games are included, although the cartridge claimed to have more than 9 million unique titles inside its ROM. This is a list of every game inside the cartridge (do not expect a 9999999-game list below, just listing different titles and its modes):

Game quality:

Since there are original NES games only, the quality of this cartridge is "high". Everything works as expected, although there are some unusual things:

• SMB's titlescreen was hacked and states a "2".
• Mario's name was replaced with "Score".
• Every game's copyright was removed.
• Soccer's copyright was replaced with "© 2001 BBGBBG"
• You can select levels by pressing either A or B (SMB only)

Is this cartridge worth?

If you play games, this cartridge should be fine. If you are a serious collector, look for the real thing.

How do I get this cartridge?

I got this cartridge from a retailer in South America. If you ask for the shopkeeper for a cartridge including Super Mario Bros, you'll probably get this one.
